A built in overflow is the most efficient method of draining aquarium water to a filter. If your aquarium does not have built-in overflow, CPR Continuous Siphon Overflows/Prefilters are the best means for getting water from an aquarium to a filter system without expensive modifications to the tank. They quietly skim up to six times more water than units with tubes. The advantages of CPR Continuous Siphon Overflows/Prefilters include: Adjustable water level allows you to easily change the level in your tank. Black top reduces algae growth. Plastic screen to prevent fish loss. Quiet operation. Tip: We recomond the use of an Aqua Lifter pump with the CPR overflows for trouble free operation. Another alternative is to hook the bleed hose from the overflow to the air intake of a power head. This way the overflow will continue to wok if it drawes some air into it or in the event of a power failure it will restart. Its a good product but I did have some major issues with it. Once I got all the kinks ironed out it did work. PROS Takes very little room inside the aquarium, unlike the converntional overflow boxes with U-Tubes. It has a large overflow box outside the aquarium and has very simple adjustments for adjusting the water level of the aquarium. It has a screen to prevent anything entering the overflow box (like snails or small fish). So it does have some good features. CONS Ok. Now the downside. When I first setup the unit the water level in the overflow box would go from the minimum to the maximum level and suck air into the sump (min level) or cause the syphon to quit (high level). So it made it very difficult to setup. I fought with this setup for some time and figured it out. The pre-filter strainer was causing the water to flow down the pipe like a cyclone and would cause the overflow to suck air. Once I removed the strainer the unit worked as you would expect. I used a short PVC pipe (instead of the strainer) and replaced the pre-filter. Everything is running fine now and the overflow box works with a constant water level. The second I put the original strainer back in place the problem started up again. This may just be my setup but it was very frustrating. Another thing thats worth noting is that this overflow is fairly loud, even when adjusted correctly. If you are going to get this unit also make sure to get an Aqua-lifter to make sure you have a constant syphon. MY THOUGHTS Overall the box does work and its better quality than other overflow boxes. Its 100% better than using U-tubes. If you buy this make sure to get an aqualifer pump. Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends. It is far superior to a like product I was replacing.I would be more comfortable if a heavier plexiglass was used as I am using pvc for my drain tubes and they are slightly heavy. However it is sufficient for most people. Give up U tubes they are the pitts!!!! Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.
