ICECAP VHO Fluorescent Lighting Systems: 4 Lamps

These retrofit kits are great if you want have an existing hood and would like to get into high intensity lighting in a simple, affordable manner. This IceCap retrofit lighting system includes:

1 IceCap 660 ballast
Acrylic mounting bracket/plate
4 46.5" VHO lamps with 180` internal reflector
Endcaps
Wiring harness with quick disconnect

Warranty: 3 years from date of purchase.

We normally recommend the following combinations for marine aquariums:

2 lamps: one actinic blue and one actinic white
3 lamps: one actinic blue and two actinic white
4 lamps: two actinic blue and two actinic white

Comments: The wire kit that comes with the ballast is all you need, but it isn’t the prettiest (group of rainbow colored wires). Length wise it will allow you to run wire to the lights up top, mount your ballast under the tank and still have some length to the power strip with the power cord. However, if you want a cleaner look invest in the 15 foot shielded wire (it is not an extender but replaces the stock wire kit). The wires are inside black heat shrink shielding and though it is difficult to see in the photos you have two sets of cord coming from the plug that goes into the ballast. One is the power cord hard wired to the plug and the other is the group of wires that you will run to the end caps. The 660 IceCap running two 110 watt VHO bulbs produces very little heat from the light bulbs and even less heat on the ballast itself (cool enough to touch after a 12 hour day). I am running 2 super actinics, 1 actinic white, and 1 aqua sun. I power on the actinic white and one super actinic in the morning. Two hours later all 4 bulbs are on and then two hours before my dusk cycle I power down the aqua sun and one of the super actinics. Final Notes: The only thing you must buy with this kit is the screws to mount the end caps and ballast into place. Replace your bulbs once a year even if the lights are still bright and working – they do lose effectiveness over time. The IceCap instructions include wiring diagrams for both the 440 and the 660 ballasts (be sure you are on the right one when you start inserting wires). This is a great kit and I am very pleased with how everything came together – good luck!

Comments: Installation of the VHO Retrofit kit was a little more time comsuming than I originally anticipated. They have been running for only a couple of days now and seam to be working great. The difference between the power compacts and the VHO lights is like night and day. The tank looks great. I would recommend that if you are to install these in an existing hood, that proper ventilation be provided. They do give off quite a bit of heat. I would highly recommend this product.
