It is a necessary addition to the skilter because it skims off the surface water, something the skilter will not do on it own. It works great, but needs two modifications. The first would be to remove the foam that covers the intake and replace it with a plastic slit system. The foam gets dirty quickly and plugs up. Leaving the intake open completely means fish can get sucked in to the pre-skimmer. I've had this happen. Nothing happend to the fish, but you have to get them out. Second, the threads that hold the screw, which holds the pre-skimmer in place, wore down. This happened after about two years and is the reason I had to buy another. A solution would be a plastic wedge inside the box that could press up against the pump, allowing for verticle movement of the intake. This shouldn't wear down after two years.
