Great Herbivore Supplement! by BRANDON POWELL Experience Level: Expert Posted on 2/8/2008 from NEW JERSEY Comments: I have struggled in the past maintaining sufficient amounts of food for grazing herbivores such as tangs. Supplementing protein for omnivores is easy, but tangs need a lot more veggie matter than protein. I have tried many different types of flake and sheeted food. I have used NUTRAFIN Max Spirulina Flakes as supplemental feeding for the past year and my tangs are healthy and happy. Tangs need to eat easily digestible foods frequently. They graze all day in the wild. I use an Eheim automatic feeder set to dispense flaked and other dried foods 4 times a day. My 230 gallon reef system (4 years mature) easily handles additional bio-load, so if you have a smaller, younger system be cautious with additions. Tangs fool many people because they are good at surviving in a balanced system for quite some time without sufficient nourishment. Don't be fooled, they will die prematurely without proper nutrition.
