Bio-BaleTM is produced from one continuous piece of F.D.A. approved, non-toxic plastic designed specifically for CPR. Bio-BaleTM is measured precisely by computer to achieve a consistent surface area.
Effectiveness—In use, Bio-BaleTM has three advantages that make it superior to any other filter media:
SURFACE AREA—Bio-BaleTM allows a greater volume of fish for any given tank size than any other media on the market today. Its large surface area and high water flow reduce toxic ammonia concentrations quickly.
SURFACE TEXTURE—Bio-BaleTM`s porous surface texture and optimum void space allows for greater water adhesion, resulting in rapid bacteria growth, even at high flow rates! Water shear is not a problem. The outstanding capillary action of Bio-BaleTM insures a wetted surface on both sides of the filter medium.

I used 3 - 1 gallon bags of the Bio-Bale for my biological media in a Eheim 2262 and also in my Eheim 2260. This has saved me a ton of money in media purchase, and greatly reduced the weight when lifting the canister for cleaning. I have had this media in service for couple months in heavily stocked cichlid aquarium, and have had no problems with Ammonia, Nitrite, or Nitrate. This stuff has a reputation for working great in wet/dry systems, and it will work in canister applications as well. When I clean the canisters, I pull out the three bundles and shake them loose in a bucket of clean aquarium water or fresh de-chlorinated about every 3 months. I highly recommend this product for cost savings, function, and quality.
