Completely Inaccurate by Instant Ocean User

Comments: Purchased this hydrometer in hopes of keeping my hands dry and replacing my Instant Ocean hydrometer. While it does keep your hands dry it was completely uncalibrated. My Deep Six measured the SG at 1.024 when a calibrated refractometer at the LFS read the SG at 1.031! Completely inaccurate, would never purchase again. I would not recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: I had a similar experience as others, in that the reading was off by 0.004! (yes, enough to do damage). I took it to the pet store and when using a sample of water which was confirmed at 1.022 with a fancy refractometer, the reading was 1.018 on the deep six! So the salesperson agreed to ship it back to Coralife and opened a new one for me. Guess what that one read 1.019! Don't waste your money. The Instant Ocean (Marine Depot Item # AS2141) is much better once you learn how to get the water in it without bubbles (which admittedly is tricky with that model). I would not recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: i just set up my first saltwater aquarium. since i am not an expert by any means i have a lot of questions and need detailed instructions, even for the simplest of things. i used my hydrometer last night and it really easy to use after i went to my local pet store and asked them how to use it. i am only giving this product 4 gold stars because of the lack of clear directions. Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: This hydrometer recently caused me some serious grief. It was reading my new 24 gallon aquapod's salinity at 1.024. My local aquarium store also measured the salinity with their own Deep Six hydrometer, recieving the same reading...perfect right? No. I soon discovered that every fish i bought would die after about a week even though my water chemistry was perfect. On a whim, I purchased a good quality refractometer and tested the salinity. This more precise device measured the salinity at a wopping 1.0295! No wonder fish were dying. So... one faulty hydrometer right? No. After bringing my refractometer to my aquarium store the salseperson was shocked to find that all three of his deep six meters were also in error, as his systems were running at a much higher salinity than he expected. In conclusion, if you are truly serious about fishkeeping, invest in a refractometer. Hydrometers like the Deep Six are simply to unreliable to entrust with the lives of expensive livestock. I would not recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: Ok, here is the trick to using this baby... don't forget to sink it rightside up into the water... I have watched people dip it top-first into the water- which is cool too, but not as accurate a reading and not the point of it. First if you do it top first, you get a bunch of bubbles on the pointer... BAD NEWS. Either way you do it, make sure you tap, tap, tap, the hydrometer on a table or your head or something else hard to displace the micro-bubbles on the pointer. You may think they don't matter, but they really, really can change the reading. Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.
