Controlling nutrients inside our aquariums is one of the keys to preventing nuisance algae growth. The AquaMaxx BioMaxx BioPellet Reactor is a finely-tuned fluidized filter designed to help hobbyists remove nitrates and phosphates from reef aquarium systems.
AquaMaxx BioMaxx bio pellet reactors are computer designed, precision-cut and made of polished A-class acrylic. All AquaMaxx media reactors are rigorously tested to ensure reliability, efficiency and affordability.
The AquaMaxx Bio Pellet Reactor utilizes a fluidizing plate to keep biopellet media suspended and evenly dispersed. The upward flow design provides maximum contact time between your aquarium water and the bio pellets inside the reactor. The Aquamaxx BioMaxx Biopellets Reactor also includes a special plate on the lid to keep media within the reactor without the need for sponges.
Adding a bio pellets reactor to your reef aquarium filtration system will improve the water quality for fish and other marine life. Biopellets initiate a more efficient denitrification process that removes nitrate and phosphate from aquarium water to prevent algae growth or harm to invertebrate and coral.
The AquaMaxx BioMaxx BioPellet Reactor requires a small pump/powerhead and tubing to push water through the reactor (sold separately). You can plumb the reactor using ¾" flexible tubing. Using a ball valve is highly recommended because it will allow you to dial-in the correct flow rate. A flow rate of 200-300 gallons per hour (GPH) is recommended for the AquaMaxx BioPellet Reactor. A flow rate of 300-600 GPH is recommended for the AquaMaxx BioMaxx XL BioPellet Reactor. Exact flow rates required to tumble the media will vary based on how much media is being used.
An optional hang-on adaptor (sold separately) is available for additional mounting configurations. For best results, use AquaMaxx BioMaxx Plus BioPellets or similar biofiltration & nutrient control filter media.
All AquaMaxx products carry a 90-day manufacturer warranty and include detailed instructions and diagrams to help hobbyists get up and running immediately.

AquaMaxx BioMaxx Plus BioPellets improve water quality for fish and other marine life in saltwater aquariums. BioMaxx Plus BioPellets initiate a more efficient denitrification process that removes nitrate and phosphate from aquarium water. High nitrate and phosphate fuels algae growth and may negatively impact invertebrate or coral.
Using BioMaxx Plus BioPellets inside a fluidized filter (media reactor) will help to achieve maximum results and efficiency. Use 0.5 to 1 liter of pellets for every 125 gallons of water. Starting with a low dosage and increasing over time is preferable to beginning with a higher dosage. Be sure to rinse the media before use.
Instructions
1. Fill your fluidized media reactor with the appropriate amount of AquaMaxx BioMaxx Plus BioPellets.
2. Use a ball valve (or similar device) to adjust the flow inside the reactor so that the BioPellets are suspended within the reactor chamber. The pellets should not be pushed to the top.
3. Check your media reactor once each day to ensure your BioPellets are still fluidized. The pellets will slough layers and decrease in size due to the tumbling action inside the reactor. Replenish your reactor every 3 to 6 months (or as needed) with additional BioPellets.

Q
Pump?
Aquamaxx recommends a pump with a flow rate of 200-300 gph. What pump do you recommend?
It presented a slight problem in that the directions were a bit nebulous! After talking to Marine Depot, we decided on the location. Works fine and my PH is down to 8 from a high of 8.6, and a day or two! I like it.
Mike
Love it so far. Nice quality. Currently running with a MaxiJet 1200. It has good media tumbling being filled about 1/3 with media. I'm replacing the pump with a DC3000 which has a controller to provide more water flow. Too soon to tell if it's making a dent in the nitrates and phosphates.
after unit runs for several days water turns foggy from pellets. even using less than half the amounts of pellets water still turns foggy and coats the sides of tank.

I was asked to write this review before any water quality results could be ascertained. Therefore, I will advise only to the matters of product assembly and pre-bacterial cultivation performance. The BioPellets and Reactor were excellently packaged including double-boxing. Be sure to read the instrux for both the Reactor and the BioPellets. Instrux are only 2 pages and plainly stateds, but be sure to follow them (including installing the ball valve on the inlet, not the outlet). I maintain about 325 gallons of marine water in my tank, so I elected to add two packets (946 ml, or nearly one liter) of Biomaxx BioPellets to the Reactor. I positioned the Reactor near my floor-mounted sump, on an inverted Reef Crystals salt bucket. This provided 14" of lift from the floor and placed the inlet/outlet at convenient heights for me. The kit does not include the plastic line, ball valve, plastic elbows and stainless steel clamps required to complete the install. These were purchased from Lowe's for about another $25. The required water pump is also not included. The manufacturer specifies a pump as small as 240 gph, but because of a total 36" vertical lift to the Reactor inlet in my installation, I used a Rio 1700 that I had in stock. This is an approx 600 gph pump. It provided enough throughput to fluidize the media, plus a bit to spare. Thus, unless you can install through the sidewall of your sump, or hang the reactor off the back wall of your tank, or unless you will fluidize less media than I, you should probably consider a pump larger than 240 gph capacity. This Reactor provides an apparently effective fluidization pattern, different than my Deltec (used for phosphate remediation). The BioPellet media both climbs the water column and twists around. It looks like every pellet gets everywhere in pretty short order. I began a Microbacter 7 solution dosing regime about 2 weeks before installing the Reactor, and will continue dosing until my 2 liter container runs out. I was advised by the manufacturer's rep that Microbacter 7 will hasten the bacterial colonization of the pellets. So far, I have no disappointments and no problems to report. If I have the opportunity to report on the denitrifying properties of this system, I will do so at a later date.Hide
