BRS Bituminous Aquarium Carbon

Bituminous carbon is the most commonly used carbon in the aquarium hobby, removing odors and discoloration from the water. Ideal for fresh or saltwater aquariums, this carbon works well when used in a media bag or reactor. It features small to medium pore sizes for effective performance without the premium cost.

Why Should I Use Carbon in My Aquarium?

Carbon has many benefits in an aquarium, including:

  • Odor Reduction: Keeps your aquarium from smelling fishy.
  • Improved Water Clarity: Achieves crystal clear water by removing yellowing pigments.
  • Toxin Removal: Effectively adsorbs toxins and other harmful chemicals from the water.

How Often Should I Change Carbon Media?

While frequency of changing will depend on your aquarium bioload and other factors, a good rule of thumb is to replace the carbon media in your aquarium every 2-4 weeks to ensure that it remains effective.

Recommended Dosage: 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons or use our Reef Calculator for hassle-free dosage recommendations.

Product Questions

How can you tell when the carbon is spent, or maybe in general how often should I change it? Though it depends on the amount of contaminants present is there a rule of thumb? Assume I use a good salt and RODI system on an average stocked mixed reef tank, carbon is in a media bag next to the bio balls. Thanks.

Hi there,

The biggest indicator will be when the reactor becomes clogged, I usually just replace it every 3 weeks.

Take care

Does this product come with a mesh bag to go in a high flow area instead of a reactor?

Thank you!

Hi Robert,
This is just the bulk carbon. If your deciding to just use a filter sock that would be purchased separately and your best bet would be the 4x8 mesh drawstring filter sock which you can find at the link below.
