Hanna Checker HI736 - Phosphorus Ultra Low Range Checker

The Hanna Phosphorus Ultra Low Range (0 to 200 ppb) Checker® bridges the gap between simple chemical test kits and professional instrumentation. Chemical test kits have limited accuracy and resolution since they rely upon the human eye to discern differences in color. Professional instrumentation incorporates a light source such as an LED or tungsten lamp with a filter and a light sensing detector to precisely determine ion concentration. Professional instrumentation offers greater resolution and accuracy but can cost hundreds of dollars. The Hanna Phosphorus Ultra Low Range Checker® uses a fixed wavelength LED and silicon photo detector to provide the accuracy of professional instrumentation at the affordable price of a chemical test kit.

The HI736 Checker® HC (Handheld Colorimeter) provides a simple, accurate and cost-effective way to measure phosphorus in marine systems including reef tanks. Phosphorus is an important parameter to measure in aquaculture and aquariums; levels that are too high can lead to extensive algae growth, depleted dissolved oxygen levels, and ultimately can be fatal to many types of fish and aquatic life. Designed as a more accurate alternative to chemical test kits, the HI736 provides quick, accurate results in a few easy steps.

How it works:

  • The Hanna Marine Ultra Low Phosphorus Checker® HC HI736 is designed to make testing quick and easy.
  • Press the button to power the meter on. Notice “Add C1” appears on the screen. You are now ready to begin testing.
  • Fill the cuvette to the 10mL line with sample and fasten the cap.
  • Using a microfiber cloth, wipe the cuvette to remove any oils or fingerprints from the glass. Then, place the cuvette into the checker and close the lid, making sure it is completely closed. It is important to make sure that the lid is completely closed for an accurate reading.
  • Press the button. Once the screen shows Add C2, remove the cuvette from the meter and add one packet of HI736-25 reagent.
  • Fasten the cap, and shake gently for 2 minutes until the powder is completely dissolved. Then wipe the cuvette of any oils and fingerprints, and place back into the meter.
  • Press and hold the button until the timer is displayed on the screen. The 3-minute countdown will begin. Once the timer reaches zero, the meter will directly display the concentration of phosphorus in ppb.

  • The Benefit of Testing for Phosphorus

Phosphorus is an essential element for all life forms. While phosphorus is vital for growth in plants and animals, it can be problematic for aquaria inhabitants, especially for coral, where excess phosphorus can even prevent calcification of coral from occurring. The main source of phosphorus in reef aquaria is through food. Phosphorus is an important part of any fish food, but much care is taken by reefers to avoid overfeeding.

what's the difference between the phosphate checker. The one that reads ppm or the ultra low. Why are there two?

    A
Phosphate checker tests Phosphate(PO4). Phosphorus checker tests Phosphorus(P). you need to convert Phosphorus checker's value to Phosphate ppm value. Value(Phosphorus: ppb) * 3.066 / 1000 = Value(Phosphate:ppm) Or you can refer the conversion table: https://hannainst.com/resources/aquarium/guides/phosphorus-to-phosphate-conversion-table--hanna-instruments.pdf However, Although you convert Phosphorus value to Phosphate, the value is not same as the measured value of Phosphate checker's value. Normally, the value of Phosphorus checker is six times higher than that of Phosphate checker. For example, if you test same water, Phosphorus checker gives you 57ppb and Phosphate checker gives you 0.03ppm. If you convert Phosphorus value to Phosphate, 57ppb * 3.066 / 1000 = 0.175ppm. But this value is six times higher than the 0.03ppm of Phosphate checker testing. Which one is correct? I dunno. But I'll buy Phosphate checker's value, because it's almost same as that of other test kits such as Red Sea.

Over the past couple of months, I've purchased and evaluated most of the hobbyist-level marine test kits from Red Sea, Salifert, Elos, Hanna, Nyos, SeaChem, Giesemann, Lamotte, and Hach, and then compared them to results from simultaneous water samples sent to Triton Labs for spectroscopy.

One of the best purchases I've made for my tank. Pretty easy to use. Some make a fuss about getting the powder into the vile. I pour the water into the packet and allow the powder to dissolve. Then i pour it into the vile. That way all of the powder is used. Gives an accurate reading.
