Seachem PhosGuard is a high capacity and high efficiency filtration product for removing phosphates and silicates from marine or fresh water aquaria. Unlike competing products, PhosGuard is bead-shaped for optimum flow characteristics and has an exceptional porosity for enhanced capacity. PhosGuard has a working capacity to remove 20 to 60 mg/L phosphate in 100 gallons with a similar impact on silicates. It may be used continuously or intermittently, and will not release removed phosphate. PhosGuard will cause a decline in hair algae and enhance coral growth. Each liter treats up to 300 gallons. Marine or freshwater use.

Q
Impact on PH and Alkalinity
Is there an impact on PH or Alkalinity with this product. If yes what do you suggest for adjustments?
Asked : Jan 16, 2017
By : Gwyn, Okatie SC

A
Phosguard has very minimal impact on pH and alkalinity when used as directed. Elevated phosphate levels can suppress coral growth, and therefore calcium/alkalinity consumption. When the phosphate level drops, the calcium/alkalinity level may increase, so it would be a good idea to monitor them.

Q
Use with cichlid tank
Will this lower GH or have a negative impact on my african cichlid lightly planted tank?
Asked : Jan 15, 2017
By : Jazmel

A
The Phosguard should have very minimal impact on your GH, if any. Typically, phosphates are needed and desirable in a planted aquarium. It would only be recommended to use Phosguard if your phosphate level is extremely high.

PROS
Works great at controlling Phosphates
CONS
Haven't found a filter bag that I really like for it. Seachem's "The Bag" is akward to use and their zipper bag is not fine enough.
REVIEW
I've used Phosguard as needed for the past year and love it. At the first sign of Phosphates I put it in my filter and the problem is solved. I always keep it on hand and love the price I get at Marine Depot.

Small, if you drop the container, you may be spending a lot of time vacuuming up your money you spent.

I bought this a long time ago to try out, the product worked and the color change to let you know it is time to change out is nice to. Looking for a cheap and different way. This is it.

This is perfect for being combined with carbon in a reactor. It does not channel so you can keep the reactor to minimal agitation.

I've been using PhosGuard for years and it works very well. It does not bother my corals and I have no algae issues at all. I use PhosGuard in a media reactor with carbon.
