Water Conditioners for Aquariums
If you’re not using a water purifier, like a RO system (and you should), then an aquarium water conditioner is a must for most freshwater fish tanks. Most tap water is treated with toxic chlorine and chloramine, which burns fish gills. Prime water conditioner, a popular choice, will remove those toxins. A water conditioner for fish may also promote fish health by repairing the fish’s slime coat, which wards off infection. While the best strategy is to use a reverse osmosis water purification system, a water conditioner will keep your freshwater fish safe from harm.
We do not recommend a water conditioner for most saltwater setups, because a) saltwater really benefits from purified water, and b) water conditioners make protein skimmers skim excessively.
