Ammonium Chloride Solution for Fishless Cycling 4oz - Dr. Tim`s Aquatics

No need to do the "Damsel" method in cycling your tank, because we find out just how hard it is to get them out of the tank once our aquascape is where we want it, and our tank is done cycling.  No need to add dead matter, like frozen shrimp or fish food, making the water smell foul.  This Ammonium Chloride Solution bottle is a reagent grade ammonium chloride made for the sole purpose of fishless cycling.

Generally, during a fishless cycle, one needs to add ammonium chloride to their tank 3 or 4 times so this bottle is enough ammonia to cycle aquariums up to 200 gallons.

  • Bottle size = 4 ounces (118 ml)
  • Dose 4 drops (.2 ml) per gallon of aquarium water
  • Concentration is 50 mg/L of total ammonia-nitrogen (TAN)
  • Use with One and Only Nitrifying Bacteria

Conversion Table:

(1 Drop = 0.05 ml)MillilitersNumber of Drops Gallons Treated
1 Teaspoon5 ml (approximately)100 (approximately)25 gallons
1 Tablespoon15 ml (approximately)

300 (approximately)

75 gallons
NOTE: As of November 1, 2016 Dr. Tim`s changed the concentration of the ammonium chloride solution so it now takes 4 drops per gallon. The previous version called for 1 drop per gallon. Please see the label on your bottle to determine how much to use. If the bottle say use 1 drop use 1 drop if the bottle says use 4 drops use 4 drops.

Works great

Pros: Clean & humane way to cycle, easy to keep consistent ammonia levels for the cycle

Cons: Doesn't come with a syringe to help with dosing

Did a complete teardown on my tank for a restart. I used this to kick off the cycle. It worked great. I'd recommend using an inexpensive API test kit with this - only way to really know how your cycle is progressing, and to check that you are dosing the correct amount of ammonia. I used an old spare 1mL syringe from a test kit for dosing.

Read directions

Pros: Works as should( introduced ammonia)

Cons: Labeling is wrong over dosed and killed bacteria.

I used this product according to the label and on the bottle i received it stated 4 drops per gallon. After dosing i checked and ammonia was over 4ppm. I also used Dr. Tims one and only and never got the tank to cycle(75 gallon 4x75=300 drops.) At the level of ammonia it killed all the bacteria in a 16 oz bottle. A waist of $90.00. It does work as described dut you need to use less than instructions this is why the 3 stars.

Do your homework

Pros: Works as advertised

Cons: Directions are vague. could cause harm to corals and inverts

Works as advertised with there plan. Plan should state you also need to monitor your nitrates. Mine were very high and needed several large water changes. There directions simply say when ammonia and nitrites are gone simply do a water change and add some fish. My nitrates were well over a hundred so I don’t think I needed to add as much as they recommend.

Essential to use Dr. Tims

Pros: It Works!

Cons: Doesn't come with the dropper to accurately dose per instructions.

Works exactly as it should. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is the bottle didn't come with a dropper. Dr. Tims is based on drops per gallon.

Nice cycle

Pros: Inexpensive, clean, humane

Cons: None

Much more humane than the old way of using Damsels or other “cheap” fish. Let’s have some respect for these beautiful marine creatures and use other methods like Dr. Tim’s! It’s also much cleaner than ghost feeding your tank. Just clean and pure ammonia... what else could we ask for? Thanks dr. Tim’s and MD for a great and inexpensive product!

Great Product

I used this to test my cycle power in a new tank. This is a much better alternative than putting Deli shrimp in the tank or torturing fish to get you through the cycle. Awesome product
