Balanced Power and Spread for Optimal Reef Tank Lighting

Discover the AquaIllumination Prime 16 HD Series, designed to enhance your aquarium with vibrant colors and powerful illumination. Control is easy with the myAI or Mobius apps, allowing you to adjust and customize the light spectrum and photoperiod to your preference. No longer are you limited to using a fixed amount of power per channel. The Prime 16 HD dynamically adjusts power available to each color, borrowing power from the colors you’re not utilizing. The result is the most vivid spectrum your tank has ever seen.

Simple Built-in Control

All AI devices include smart control standards. Use the myAI app on any iOS or Android device and is probably one of the easiest pieces of software to get up and running. The programming can be as simple as using a pre-defined cycle all the way to multi-point programming that lets you customize the intensity and spectrum throughout the day. The app is fully expandable from a single light up to more than you would ever need on your reef tank using the master/slave programming, you only need to program a single light.

Download the MyAi App:

Compatible with MXM

Neptune Systems, EcoTech Marine, and AquaIllumination have joined forces to bring MXM to life. Now all your favorite EcoTech and AI pumps and lights can be under the wireless control of Apex & Apex Fusion—the user-friendly, yet powerful, interface you already know and love. No more switching between multiple apps.

Power Output

With a spread of 24″ x 24″, the AI Prime 16HD has a peak PAR of 100µMol at a depth of 24 inches, perfect for the small to medium reef tanks. Drawing a maximum of 55 watts from the wall, it follows in the family’s efficient footsteps.

Optics

The AI Prime 16HD comes standard with TIR lenses giving you the best balance of power and spread. Our lens optics are custom designed, boasting greater than 90% optical efficiency and including a diffuse exit surface to provide improved color blending.

Mounting AI Prime Lights

There are multiple mounting options available from hanging to tank mounting kits. The AI Flex Arm gives a lot of adjustabilities, where the hanging kit option gives a sleek minimalistic appearance to the tank, and in most cases, the environment around your aquarium will help dictate which mounting option will be best for you.

Product Questions

Starting a 24x24x12 shallow slightly mixed reef, maybe some sps. Will the spread on one of these suffice in your opinion or should I bump up to the 32? Dont want to burn out everything else either. Thanks
Question by: Ian on Feb 26, 2024, 9:14 AM
Hey there,
Thank you for reaching out to us. With that tank depth I would stick to the Prime 16 HD LED Reef Light . The 32 has a effective depth of 24'" which would overkill the corals in that shallow of a tank. Please let me know if you need anything further.

I have a 20 gallon long with soft and lps . How many prime 16 would I need & would u recommend the prime 12” or 18” flexible arm?
Question by: Mike on Feb 24, 2024, 4:07 PM
Hey there,
Thank you for reaching out to us. One Prime 16 HD would be plenty. As for the mounting arm and the tank depth I'm assuming 15", the 12" arm is probable best for softie's and LPS Please let me know if you need anything further.

I have a 20x20x18 tank with rock and hope to put some macro algae and anemones in it. I currently have Green Star Polyps and Pumping Xenia Coral. Would you recommend ai 16 or 32?
Question by: Care Macready on Dec 13, 2022, 1:00 PM
Hello! I would go with one Prime 16 that will be plenty of light for your tank. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out by email or by giving us a call.
Answer by: Adam Malik (BRS Staff) on Dec 13, 2022, 3:38 PM
Are these lights compatible / IOTA compliant with Apex system.
Look forward to hearing back from you soon!
Thank you in advance!

Hey there,
Thank you for reaching out to us. While older Primes are https://www.neptunesystems.com/downloads/docs/IoTa-AI_Prime_and_Hydra_User_Guide.pdf

New Primes and Hydra lights are not.

Currently setting up a 4ft long tank that’s 27 inches deep. I want to have a mixed reef tank with LPS and a few SPS. Should I go with 3 or 4 AI prime 16’s? And if so what’s the spacing
Question by: Erik on Mar 14, 2022, 9:13 PM
Hey there,
Thank you for reaching out to us. For this size tank, We would recommend 4 lights that are evenly spaced.

Please let me know if you need anything further and take care!

Hello, I am setting up a new reef tank that will be sps/ soft coral dominant. It is a 133 gal 60x24x24 system. I am trying to determine if 3 of the Prime 16s will be sufficient, or if I should consider the Hydra 32s. I understand that I may need to add lights if I eventually move to more demanding corals. Thanks!
Question by: Drew on Feb 28, 2022, 3:25 PM
Three AI Primes spread equally across the tank should work but four would be better. You can always add more lights down the road as your corals grow or you add some high light requiring species.
Answer by: Scott F.(BRS Staff) on Mar 4, 2022, 4:41 PM
Hi there! Would 2 or 3 of these work on a 48”x19”x21” tall tank? Or would it be better for 2 with a T5 Hybrid? Tank is LPS dominate with a few SPS at top of rock work.
Question by: Danielle W. on Jan 1, 2022, 2:26 PM
For best results I would go with 3 depending on the size of the corals currently in the aquarium. This way you can avoid shaded areas. I would also recommend purchasing a PAR meter to test the PAR at different locations. This will ensure you set the lights at the proper height as well as setting the intensities of each lighting channel. Below is one of my favorite videos we have of the Prime lights for different tank sizes and the results of the tests BRS performed. The good news is that you can always add additional Prime lights to your setup as the system grows in and you get additional shading from the larger corals.

Would 2 of these led enough with the aqua life hybrid to support a mixed reef in my 75gal tank
Question by: Johnny Hanceri on Sep 12, 2020, 12:09 PM
Yes, two would be great for a mixed reef and the hybrid fixture.
Answer by: Matt Lucero (BRS Staff) on Nov 5, 2021, 9:54 AM
Would this be a good light for my 16 gallon Biocube? I currently have one torch coral but want to add some more LPS and possibly SPS in the future. Thanks for the help!
Question by: Lucas Rafello on Apr 15, 2020, 3:17 AM
Hi there,

That would be an excellent light choice for that tank!

Take care
Answer by: Thomas Billington on Apr 16, 2020, 1:52 PM
Would one of these be sufficient on a 17.7? L x 17.7? W x 15.8? H 20-gallon tank with mainly softies and easy LPS with 1-3 SPS?
Question by: Holden Darcy on Jan 23, 2020, 8:32 AM
Hey there!

The recommended spread for that light is 24"x24", it should be able to grow your coral!

Take care

What’s the difference between the new ai primes and the older ones
Question by: Charles Dees on Dec 5, 2019, 1:46 PM
Hey there!

There are only a few differences between models, the newer ones have a couple more LED channels including a dedicated moonlight channel. Another difference is the light only works with bluetooth on the app, not wifi anymore.

Take care
Answer by: Thomas Billington on Dec 6, 2019, 12:37 PM
Would two of these be efficient enough to put over a 75 gallon semi mixed reef tank?
Question by: Nathan Skalsky on Nov 2, 2019, 9:00 PM
Hey there-

Great question! For a mixed reef this should be sufficient for you needs, however higher light corals will need to be centered more closely around the LED pucks for ample PUR.

Happy reefing! c:
