The AquaMaxx HOB-R Hang-On-Back Refugium is the quick and easy way to create a small ecosystem for your aquarium.

A refugium helps control nitrates and phosphates in a natural way by providing space for macroalgae to grow.  Macroalgae will compete with nuisance algae within the aquarium, and assist your filtration system in cleaning up the water column.

The HOB-R will also harbor many beneficial invertebrates which consume uneaten food or detritus. Invertebrates such as copepods and amphipods can be found living in the sand and liverock in many aquariums, however, these invertebrates can often diminish in numbers as they are preyed upon by inhabitants.  Adding a refugium will shelter these tasty fish snacks, ensuring that there is a colony consistently providing to the food chain and helping in the break down of organics, in safety.

HOB-R Features:

  • A Sicce Syncra Nano pump powers the system, and is contained within a baffle
  • Baffle housing allows use of a sand bed in the refugium
  • Large viewing pain on the back panel for monitoring algae growth
  • Slotted pre-outlet helps keep macro-algae from escaping into the display
  • Outlet sponge helps keep microbubbles from entering the aquarium
  • Easy to secure and remove inlet for quick maintenance

Works as intended.

Pros: Built well and blocks light bleed.

Cons: Instructions can use a bit of work with priming and power shutoff.

My old old Aquafuge started to crack so this was a great replacement at a lower cost. Like how it blocked most of the light spill by using solid black acrylic. One helpful tip that the instructions did not provide when starting up is to remove the top pipe first then turn on the pump. Mines would not prime correctly the first time with no water in the pipe. I had to turn on the pump first then slowly hovered over the connection hold on the pump to create suction. Also reminder that when you unplug or power outage the in the refugium will drain to match the level in the display, so ensure you have enough volume for the displacement.

Great Product

Pros: High quality product

Cons: none

I do not have a sump on my 45gal. FOWLR Tank. This unit fits perfectly and has a slim profile. It runs very quietly with not too much flow which is perfect for a refiugium. I paired it with a . Innovative Marine AUQA Gadget Chaetomax 2-in-1 9W Refugium LED Light and the Chaeto loves it!

Well made

Pros: Quiet, sturdy

Cons: No surface skimming

I set this up a few days ago and it actually fits on the back of my IM25g perfectly with a inTank floss holder on the left and media holder on the right. It does not interfere with the chambers of my IM tank or the ATO. When power is cut the back chambers rise a bit but there is no risk of flood.

The Aquamaxx HOB feels very sturdy and it runs quiet. I have it in my bedroom without noise issues. Small skimmers or reactors can also fit inside this HOB. The pump is easy to remove for cleaning as there is an acrylic piece that the pump attaches to that can easily lifted out. There is also a single small baffle to help prevent the contents of the fuge coming in contact with the pump. It comes with a sponge to silence splash noise but I replaced it with some disposable floss for easy clean-up.

The Aquamaxx HOB is has a much larger area to cultivate pods than what was left in my IM tank and I can't wait to get some microfauna growing. It would also be fairly easy to modify this HOB for surface skimming if that was needed.

I have attached some photos, my tank is a bit of a mess as I was moving some corals around but you get the idea.
