Hurricane Harvey: Updates on the Current Situation and How Shipping Is Affected

The Houston area continues to be severely impacted with catastrophic flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Dangerous flooding will continue from Houston all the way into southwestern Louisiana for the rest of the week. These rains are currently producing catastrophic and life-threatening flooding over large portions of southeastern Texas.

Houston’s two major airports George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) are now open. The resumption of flights at Houston Bush Intercontinental and Houston Hobby airports – even on a limited basis – marks the first step toward the return of normal airline service.

All Houston port facilities will remain closed on Thursday, August 31st due to the weather impact across Houston. At this point, there are no indications from the U.S. Coast Guard on when the Houston Ship Channel will reopen for vessel transits. Any vessels and their schedule with a port call to any of the Gulf Ports (Houston/ New Orleans/ Galveston/ Mobile) in week 35 and beyond are impacted as they omit the ports and revise vessel rotation.

All rail operations at Houston-area railyards and facilities continue to be suspended. Portions of major interstate highways in the Houston area remain closed. There is currently no estimate when the facilities and roadways will re-open.
