Product Questions

Would this work good in a refugium?
Question by: Jason West on Dec 14, 2021, 7:44 PM
Thank you for reaching out with your question. Ocean Direct is a great sand but it does blow around quite a bit due to the varied grain size. If you are going to have mangroves in your refugium then it is a fantastic option but for a non planted refugium I would recommend special grade.

What is the shelf life on this live sand?
Question by: Robert Higgins on Mar 21, 2018, 11:23 AM
Hi there,
Thank you for reaching out with your question.
The sand is good for about 24 months after manufacturing and is marked with a best before date.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.
Have a great day!

What is the sand composed of? Silica? Aragonite? I'm just curious.
Question by: Shannon on May 22, 2017, 9:32 PM
The Ocean Direct live sand is an aragonite-based natural substrate.

Have a great day!

My 120 gallon tank is 72L x ~21H x 18W. What are ideal sand bed depths? If I wanted ~1-1.5 inches of sand, how much should I order? Thanks for your time!
Question by: Kyle on Feb 7, 2016, 7:39 PM
Great question!
The ideal sand bed will vary from tank to tank whichever you prefer! For 1-1.5" sand bed you will need 70 lbs of sand for a tank of your size. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

Can you add additional live sand to an established tank without causing it to cycle?
Question by: Matthew on Jun 12, 2014, 12:25 PM
Hey Matthew,
It makes a cloudy mess to add any sand to an existing tank (which is just an inconvenience more then an actual issue) but it shouldn't cause any sort of cycle. Live sand isn't like live rock in the sense of it having critters in it (that could die, cycle, etc) it just has bacteria on it.
