Check Valve and Anti-siphon

An aquarium check valve is an anti-siphon valve or backflow preventer that prevents flood in a power outage.

What is a check valve? An aquarium check valve prevents backflow. Normally, the return pump pushes water from the sump back to the aquarium. However, in a power outage water can siphon back and create a flood. An aquarium check valve stops the back drain. Want to know how to install a check valve for an aquarium? The check valve goes on the return line between return pump and return inlet.

FPT, or female pipe thread, has threads on the inside wall
A PVC slip fitting, or slip fit, has no threads and connects to PVC pipe
PVC insert fittings, or hose barb fittings, connect to aquarium tubing (not flex PVC pipe)
