Find a needle wheel impeller replacement for a needle wheel pump.

Most saltwater protein skimmers use a needle wheel impeller pump. A needle wheel impeller needs to be replaced every few years. Over time, the magnet weakens and the rubber grommets deteriorate, which can reduce protein skimmer performance. Be sure to buy the needle wheel impeller that is made for your protein skimmer pump.

The impeller is the only moving part in most aquarium pumps. Check to make sure the impeller and pump housing is clear of debris and scaling. Check any rubber grommets for wear. Check the impeller shaft for wear and cracks. Check to ensure the impeller magnet is not swollen. Check the needle wheel for broken needles (some needle wheels are designed with missing needles). Double check to ensure the impeller is properly seated. If none of these steps fix your noisy aquarium pump, you may need to purchase a replacement impeller. It is common for an impeller to need replacement every few years.
