Multiple Flow Modes

Lagoon Mode

Lagoon Mode

Simulating a low-energy lagoon. The QuietDrive motor slowly changes, recreating the gentle currents of a lagoon environment.

Reef Crest Mode

Reef Crest Mode

Simulating currents found around high energy reefs. The pump changes speed frequently emulating crashing waves and tidal surges. This is a great mode for SPS corals.

Gyre mode

Gyre Mode

Uniform circular flow creates motions that help transports water from one side of the tank to the other. With two pumps paired in Gyre Mode, you can oscillate between a clockwise and counterclockwise gyre that lasts from 2 seconds to 2 hours.

Short Pulse Mode

Short Pulse Mode

Strong short pulses that can be set at intervals of 0.2 seconds up to 2 seconds. This mode can create a standing wave in your tank with the correct frequency.

Tidal Swell Mode

Tidal Swell Mode

A harmonic balance of the ever changing conditions found in the ocean. TSM will vary from calm flow all the way up to chaotic high flow and it even has a pre-programmed detritus cleaning surge that will help suspend particles to be swept into the filtration system.

Nutrient Transport

Nutrient Transport Mode

NTM is programmed to create a two-phase circulation flow mode. Phase one consists of wave motions to help stir up and suspend detritus while the second phase incorporates surging motions to help push particles towards the overflow and down into the filter system. This is our favorite mode and is especially great for sensitive corals like LPS and SPS.

Function Modes

Feed Mode

Feed Mode

Pause all of your wireless Ecotech Pumps at the push of a button. Pumps will turn down to an idle speed allowing you to feed your tank without the food being pushing into rocks or into the filtration system.

Night Mode

Night Mode

Simulate a calmer environment for night time hours. Night Mode can be enabled or disabled with custom hours programmed to automatically turn on and off.

Wave Auto Tune

Wave Auto Tune Mode

Create a standing wave in your aquarium to help sweep detritus and other foreign particles from the sandbed. It is amazing what will magically float out of the rocks when a standing wave is created. We highly suggest pairing two wireless pumps for this mode to get the full effect!

Product Questions

I am building a 220 gallon 72"LX24"DX30"H. How many of the MP40WQD would you recommend and how would you advise placing them?

Thank you.
Question by: Gregory Wach on Apr 8, 2020, 9:39 PM
Hi Gregory,

The flow requirements of your reef are going to depend largely on what types of corals you wish to keep. Your aquascape and coral placement are also going to be factors here so being able to spread that flow throughout the tank is going to be important.
Soft corals for instance would likely be happy with 2 MP40's running at 50% or less where as a tank full of mature SPS colonies could require as many as 4 or more to ensure optimal flow.
I think a safe starting point for a new reef would be to aim for 20x turn over rate within the tank taking into account that you are unlikely to run the pumps at 100% for any sustained period of time. You can always add more MP40's (or any other type of powerhead) to suit your need as the tank matures.

I hope this helps!
Happy Reefing

Can you use them on a round tank? also can the part with the cord get wet like in the overflow?
Thanks
Question by: Christopher Jones on Feb 6, 2020, 10:22 PM
Hey there,

They will not work with round tanks, needs to have a completely flat surface and the part with the cord cannot get wet at all.

Take care

I have a tank 120 g the demension is 4ft w x 2ft hx 2ft depth. I am currently using Gyre 3k. I wanted to switch to Vortech MP40, How many do I need to use for my tank?
Question by: Ric on Feb 1, 2020, 4:12 PM
Hey there,

I would go with a minimum of 4 if you are going to use the MP40s only.
Answer by: Thomas Billington on Feb 6, 2020, 10:27 AM
What are the dimensions of the controller? Just wondering if it would mount into my available space in my electrical cabinet.
Question by: Crystal Rode on Jan 21, 2020, 4:10 PM

What is the minimum flow rate for the MP40WQD?
Question by: Axle Davis on Apr 15, 2019, 10:42 PM
Hi there! The minimum flow rate on the MP40 pumps is 1000gph. Have a great day :)
Answer by: Joe on Apr 16, 2019, 1:38 PM
Hi, would 2 MP40 be good enough for a 125 (6ft Long) mix reef? Thanks
Question by: Diana Powers on Jan 5, 2019, 3:52 PM
Thank you for reaching out to us! This is a great question. These pumps offer a lot of control-ability for a variety of flow options. You have the ability to crank them up for high flow environments as well as tone them down for a lower flow environment. Echotech Marine has a great tool on their website to help calculate which pump would be most ideal for any tank. I will link it below.

I hope this was helpful!

Question, On the waterbox tank 130.4 would 1 mp40 work or would 2 be better?
Second question, at what speed % would be recommended?
Thank you.
Question by: ARMANDO CEJA on Aug 16, 2018, 9:20 PM
We would recommend 2x MP40s and if looking for help on dialing in internal flow we went ahead and provided a link below that Mr. Saltwater Tank did with World Wide Corals. Happy Reefing!

Can 2 powerheads be controlled with one controller?

I have had one mp40 for 4 years and now want to get another
Question by: jeremy on Nov 27, 2017, 11:45 AM
Ecotech Vortech Pumps can be synced with their wireless controllers. If your current pump is an EcoSmart version, then it should be compatible to be controlled with a new QuietDrive driver and pump. You will need two controllers but through the wireless connection feature, you can control the slave pump from the master's controller.
Answer by: Charlie on Nov 28, 2017, 8:35 AM
Will one driver operarate two wireless power heads and if so can you buy an extra power head without a driver?
Question by: Michael Beagan on Jun 5, 2017, 1:39 PM
Each powerhead connects directly to its driver, and drivers can only control one pump. If you get the wireless pump drivers, they do have the ability to be synchronized wirelessly with each other for different flow modes.

Happy reefing!

Will the new wireless qd pumps communicate with the previous generation wireless pumps?
Question by: Thomas German on Jan 3, 2017, 6:44 PM
Great question! The wireless communication will work for all EcoTech products, old and new, as long as they have "wireless" RF Chip installed. :-)

How many would you recommend on a 60x24x24 sized tank.

Could I get by with one a a mostly LPS dominant tank?
Question by: Jay McGahan on Dec 2, 2016, 8:42 AM
Great question! Two of these pumps would be perfect for your tank! :-)
Answer by: Randy on Dec 2, 2016, 8:43 AM
I have a 24x24x24 cube. I think my flow needs would be somewhere on the high end of the MP 10 and the low end of the MP 40. I would like the powerhead to be very quiet. Will I see much difference in the noise of these two pumps with the MP10 running high power or the MP 40 at low power?
Question by: Gregory Butner on Nov 8, 2016, 1:23 PM
Great question! With the newest QuietDrive technology from EcoTech Marine, both of these pumps are extremely quiet! As far as flow requirements for your cube, I would recommend the MP40s over the MP10s. It is a nice feature that you can dial down the flow of the MP40s rather than hope the MP10s will be enough at full power, better yet, they will grow with you for a future tank upgrade! ;-)
Answer by: Randy on Nov 8, 2016, 6:49 PM
I have a older oceanic 210 aquarium. Being that its a oceanic, it 3/4 inch glass. Would a mp40 still work thru it?
Question by: Dustin on Nov 2, 2016, 9:22 PM
Hey Dustin,
The Vortech Mp40 pumps will work on glass thicknesses of 3/16?? – 3/4??. This will work just fine.
Answer by: Jason Smith on Nov 8, 2016, 7:24 AM
Is this just a single pump or two? I have a 72"x24"x24" 180 gl tank. Will one pump be sufficient?
Question by: Mark Steffen on Jul 23, 2016, 1:11 AM
Hi Mark,
The Ecotech MP40WQD pumps are sold individually. On a 180g tank, as a reef tank you would want to get at least two pumps since one most likely won’t be able to provide flow once the rock and corals are added. By having two pumps, you can truly create random flow from multiple directions. We find having a single flow direction can actually hinder coral growth and lead to some un-natural growth patterns as well.
Answer by: Charlie on Jul 24, 2016, 10:53 AM
I'm planning on getting a 220 gallon tank will the MP40wQD be enough?
Question by: Tony Bily on May 11, 2016, 9:36 PM
Great question!
Two of the MP40's would be a fantastic option for a 220 gallon tank. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor on May 16, 2016, 9:24 PM
Will one MP40xQD be enough for my 125 gallon mixed reef tank (72" wide).
Question by: Jason Eddy on May 11, 2016, 7:49 PM
Great question!
One Mp40 could work to great enough flow at a higher output however the flow pattern will be limited. We recommend two or at least another pump to break up the flow and eliminate dead zones. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor on May 12, 2016, 4:21 PM
I have a 24x24x24 cube which powerhead would be the best fit Ecotech or Maxspect gyre and which one?
Question by: Ryan Espinoza on Apr 24, 2016, 11:06 PM
Great question!
Both will work well! The Mp40 as a low profile easy to use features with no cables in the aquarium. The Gyre if you are looking for the unique gyre flow across the entire tank. Both will suit your needs perfectly! (The xf130 would be a great fit)
Answer by: Connor on Apr 27, 2016, 2:26 PM

Is the mp40qd apex compatible? Assuming I have the wxm module?
Question by: Heidi Clark on Mar 11, 2016, 9:19 AM
Great question!
The MP40 QD is compatible with the WXM module for the apex. All Mp40's will come with the wireless chip installed. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor on Mar 11, 2016, 9:25 AM
I have a 72 gallon bow front mixed reef tank. How many powerbeads do i need? Is one mp40 good enough, two mp10s? two mp40s?
Question by: Jeff on Feb 24, 2016, 3:05 PM
Great question!
Overall 2 powerheads can create more unique flow in the aquarium which may be the deciding factor. We would recommedn 2 MP10's as long as the glass thickness is 3/8" or under. If the glass is thicker you may need the MP40. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor on Feb 24, 2016, 3:09 PM
These say they have a night time mode, is that setting achieved manually?
Can the Reeflink be programed to control the night mode it so it goes on/off automatically so I don't have to do it.
If the Reeflink can be programed to control the pump and you hit feed mode does it go back to the program after the feed mode time is up?
Question by: Melanie on Feb 1, 2016, 8:47 AM
Great question!
The night mode will trigger and last for a set amount of time if manually programmed to do so per the instructions. The same will go for the feed mode. In Reef link you will be able to further program the settings to turn on and off at specific times or after the original feed mode has been set. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

I have a 300 gallon 8 ft long peninsula tank. I was thinking of getting 2 mp40's and wondering if this will be enough to move the water from one end and back as I plan to have both pumps on the end that is against the wall instead of one on each end.
Question by: Lori Willis on Jan 14, 2016, 7:18 AM
Hey there!
With the MP40 they would tend to be a little small for the 8' length you will be needing. Overall you will need an option such as the MP60 to get the correct flow across the full length of the tank. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
