Aquarium Power Filters

A power filter sits on the rim of the aquarium with an inlet tube that pulls water into the fish tank filter. The water then passes through a chamber with a filter cartridges, or activated carbon and aquarium filter pads, before cascading back into the tank. The cascading water aerates and circulates the water. Basic power filter maintenance involves replacing the filter cartridge as needed (usually every 4-6 weeks). A small dose of aquarium bacteria can replace beneficial bacteria lost during filter change.

Some brands, like the AquaClear power filter, have an open chamber instead of a cartridge filter slot. This allows you to customize your aquarium media. The Aquaclear filter has filter media pouches and sponges that can be mixed and matched. You can also use filter media bags to add your own choice of aquarium filtration media.
