How well would this do in a salt water tank?
I'm in between this and an aquaclear HOB. I'm just using it for my quarantine tank so I don't need anything too crazy. I just can't determine if this would be a decent choice because I've read that the canister filters can cause spikes in nitrates.
Any filter that traps organic matter in a mechanical filter pad has the potential to increase nitrates if not cleaned properly or often enough. This is a great filter and will work for a quarantine tank.

I bought this for my 36 gall tank and am very happy with it. Been running it know for about 6 weeks. Its extremely quite and easy to clean, though I do it twice a week, its not very dirty. may be to still a light bio load in my tank.

Nitrites are ZERO and Nitrates well within range. Very quiet and allows me to make the water change by simply removing the input/outut and letting the water drain into buckets. When complete I just shut of the flow and reconnect to the filter!!!!

More powerful, less noise, simpler design and an improved priming system. Same configuration as a 405, with the weak points vastly improved. There are parts that wear out over time, but replacement parts are available. Mine has been running for 2 years with media replacement the only thing I have had to do. Good return on investment and is truly trouble free. If you are looking for a good solid canister filter that is not over done with electronic gadgets, dependable operation, hassle free set-up, comes w/DVD and comes with everything you need to install and operate the filter, I would suggest this product.
