The Ultra Low Range Phosphate Checker® HC (HI774) is a cost-effective way to measure phosphate in marine systems, including reef tanks. Testing for phosphates is standard practice for saltwater aquariums and provides valuable insight into your reef tank’s water chemistry to help ensure long-term coral health.

Phosphates are one of the many forms of phosphorus compounds found in marine waters. Excessive phosphate levels can prevent calcification, skeletal formation, and growth of many coral species, particularly those referred to as SPS or small-polyp stony. In addition, high phosphate levels can cause nuisance algae growth in your reef tank. This can become problematic because algae often out competes sessile organisms for light, nutrients, and space, jeopardizing long term coral health in your reef.

Features:

  • Accurate digital test kit for reef tank phosphate levels
  • Easier to use and more accurate than chemical test kits
  • Dedicated to a single parameter
  • Small size, big convenience
  • Ideal for: Aquariums, Environmental, Aquaculture, Water Quality
  • Removes subject color interpretations from testing results

A
Yes, This Hanna Colorimeter can be used with a reef tank with corals. Recommended values should be lower than .05 ppm but may be allowed to go as high as 0.2 ppm for fish only systems.

Q
Is this worth getting if you have the phosphate checker HI713?
Asked : Jan 31, 2019

A
Hello there, Well that will depend on your aquarium. For a Fish Only with Live Rock (FOWLR) system the Hanna LR checker HI713 will be just find and dandy. If you are dabbling more into a dedicated reef aquarium and will be housing coral less sensitive to phosphate then the Hanna ULR checker HI774 is the winner for you. Have a nice day.

PROS
Cheap when considering acro loss prevention!
CONS
None unless you're impatient when testing. 5 min procedure.
REVIEW
One of the best purchases I have made in this hobby. Previously i was using a salifert test kit which was giving me the impression my nitrates were at zero but my acros were growing painfully slow. I decided to stop being stingy considering an acro frag is more expensive than this lovely checker

If you need accurate phos levels for your reef tank this is the one! Prep everything ahead of time(cut and crimping the packet is key) so you don’t time out. It’s so easy to get a definitive number. No more color guesses.

PROS
NOT HAVING TO GUESS AT COMPARISON TO COLOR STRIPS!!!
CONS
A little long for the test while you wait for secondary reaction to take place, but there's other things we can always be doing on tank while waiting, right?
REVIEW
I'm glad I have this to test for phosphate, particularly since I'm about to set up a Pax Bellum ARID, which instructs -- we all follow instructions, don't we?! :) -- to maintain a certain ratio of N to P. This will help. I wish Hanna made a comparable Nitrate checker....
