Designed for Research Grade Analysis

HANNA‘s HI 96822 Digital Refractometer is a rugged portable, water resistant device that utilizes the measurement of the refractive index to determine the salinity of natural and artificial seawater, ocean water or brackish intermediates. The HI 96822 benefits from HANNA‘s years of experience as a manufacturer of analytical instruments. This digital refractometer eliminates the uncertainty associated with mechanical refractometers and is rugged and portable enough to be used at home, in the lab and out in the field.

The HI 96822 is an optical device that is quick and easy to use. After a simple user calibration with steam-distilled water (do not use RO or RO/DI water for calibration), a seawater sample can be introduced into the sample well.

Within seconds, the refractive index and temperature are measured and converted into one of 3 popular measurement units: Practical Salinity Units (PSU), Salinity in parts per thousand (ppt), or Specific Gravity (S.G. (20/20)). All conversion algorithms are based upon respected scientific publications using the physical properties of seawater (not sodium chloride).

Temperature (in °C or °F) is displayed simultaneously with the measurement on the large dual level display along with icons for Low Power and other helpful message codes.

Manufacturer information

Hanna Instruments USA Aquarium Supplies
Hanna Instruments is a leading manufacturer of analytical aquarium instrumentation. They were founded in 1978 and are headquartered in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. When Hanna introduced pH Electronic Paper in 1986 it literally revolutionized the world of testing by allowing millions of people in various industries to test for pH in a simple, accurate and affordable way. Hanna employees are constantly challenging themselves to improve on existing technology and to invent new testing techniques with the common goal to simplify analytical testing. This applies not only to instrumentation, but also to sensors development, reagents and chemicals. Hanna also believes in controlling the quality of their products from inception to delivery so they manufacture everything themselves, from meters and electrodes to chemical reagents and buffer solutions.

Amazing accuracy

Pros: Ease of use....

Cons: Little large, nut not a deal kill.

I received the unit last week. Packaged very nicely, and safely. When I first used it after an almost nothing calibration, it quickly gave me the 3 reading from the same sample by simply pressing a button. Accuracy is spot on. I checked using different brand tests to see, but this one is so simple! Couple of drops of tank water, and bingo! Definitely recommend this, along with the other Hanna checkers I got as well.

Excellent

I really wrote a review however if your like me hate using and calibrating a refractometer , then this is a must have , it takes the guess work out and is spot on , just make sure you rinse it off after each use cause if you let old salt water dry on it when you go to do a reading of your take on future the old salt creep will throw off your reading so always rinse off

Love It

Been using this refractometer just over a month and love it. It's super simple to use. I used the old manual refractometer for many years just feel this unit provides a more accurate reading

Great Product

I started with a hydrometer and then moved up to a refractometer, but I was still uncertain about whether I was reading the scale correctly since the line between white and blue was somewhat of a gradient. After my first week with this digital refractometer, I am 100% pleased. I tested it against two 35ppt calibration solutions several times over the past week and every time it has been dead on. The readings are so simple it was convenient to use to test my acclimation process for a new fish. I took samples of the fish water until it was the same salinity as the display tank: very easy with very little hassle.

Poor accuracy

Good - it gives the same reading every time. Consistent... Bad - it has accuracy of +|-.003. It read 1.021 on my reef aquarium which was really 1.024. I contacted Hanna and they informed me that it is within margin of error. Well .003 matters in a sps tank.

Excellent

Best purchase so far. Dont risk your precious animals to a flimsy hydrometer, get the best and never worry about your salinity again. Very easy to use and calibrate!

Great Product

Yes, this is worth getting if you have the money to spend on it. I tested the results against 3 other testing procedures and this thing was dead on. Makes reading sg very easy and accurate. Buy this, you wont regret it.

Excellent!!

Wow! If you've got a few extra buck they would be well spent on the 96822. I think back to my early years of using a floating hydrometer, this is "Star Trek" level technology in comparison! Calibrate with a few drops of distilled water and away you go!
