My Experience

Pros: Excellent product and service from Marine Depot

Cons: Just the SNAFU with the crack during shipment

I am writing this review to say the JBJ SK45 is an excellent skimmer for my JBJ rimless 45. I let it run 24/7 except during coral and fish feeding times. You have to be patient till it gets dirty (broken in). After that it does its job exceptionally well, just empty the collection cup when needed and let it eat. Lots of air helps but you have to find the sweet spot.
The other half of this review covers the exceptional service I have received from Marine depot. My 1st skimmer came with a V-shaped crack in the main body. I wasn't aware of the service that immediately occurred. Marine Depot had a replacement coming within a day. Chris (in email) and the other guy (I'm sorry I don't remember your name) I talked to on the phone were great. I know I'm not supposed to mention service, but this is exceptional proactive customer service.

Let it get dirty

Pros: It works

Cons: quality control as mentioned in the review

I haven't had any trouble getting the skimmer to work once it was broken in (dirty). However, the skimmer I received had a V-shaped crack in the main body at the bottom and no provision for a set screw for height adjustment. There was no set screw for the height adjustment ring for the main body wasn't even drilled and tapped for one. Thankfully super glue fixed both. I would have given 5 stars if not for the crack in the main body and adjustment ring not drilled and tapped for and the lack of set screw problem

JBJ SK-45 Protein Skimmer

Skimmer works well, bracket for rimless aquariums poorly made and keeps breaking.

Not a bad little skimmer, but shouldn't be on more than a 10gal with a moderate bioload.
