Macroalgae for Aquariums

Chaetomorpha is the most popular macroalgae for sale because of its role in exporting nutrients. Chaetomorpha, also known as spaghetti algae, soaks up nitrates and phosphates as it quickly grows. Place chaetomorpha in a refugium or macrolagae reactor to reduce nutrients and problems with aquarium algae, while also providing a home for copepods.

Red macroalgae, like gracilaria, is a great food for tangs and other herbivorous fish. Grow red algae in the refugium and occasionally feed some to the fish in the display tank.

calcareous macroalgae, like money plant (halimeda) and mermaid’s fan, can be placed in a saltwater aquarium or reef tank display to enhance the natural beauty of the fish tank.
