Temporarily Out of Stock

At Marine Depot, we spend a lot of time mixing fresh saltwater and performing water changes for our home and office aquariums. So much so that we discovered we all pretty much rely upon the same pieces of equipment to perform these important weekly (or bi-weekly) tasks:

  • A pump for mixing salt and returning clean saltwater to your aquarium during a water change
  • 10` of clear vinyl tubing (so you can see if anything gets stuck inside) for siphoning out dirty water, vacuuming substrate, and returning clean water to your tank
  • A refractometer to measure the salinity of your aquarium and the saltwater you are mixing for water changes
  • A reliable aquarium heater to warm up the saltwater you are mixing so it matches the temperature in your tank
  • A thermometer to measure the temperature of the saltwater you are mixing so that it matches your aquarium

We put together a saltwater mixing kit and water change bundle that includes all of these useful items. The best part? Purchased separately these products would cost you $145.50. Bought together in this bundle, you`ll save 10%!

Hobbyists are often particular about the salt mix they use, so that`s why we decided to omit salt from this bundle. However, if you need help choosing a salt mix for your tank, feel free to contact us with your questions! We are happy to help!

Now, let`s take a closer look at each of the items included in this bundle. You`re going to love it!

AquaMaxx REEFractometer Refractometer

AquaMaxx designed the REEFractometer specifically for reef aquarium use to measure the salinity of natural sea water (NSW). Additionally, the AquaMaxx REEFractometer is calibrated at a natural seawater temperature of 77°F.

Most handheld saltwater refractometers available in the hobby are designed and calibrated for testing brine solution (i.e. sodium chloride) at 70°F and does not account for the refractive index of natural sea water and the warmer reef temperatures. This is a very important distinction: other salinity refractometers used for marine aquariums are designed to test saltwater and nothing else! The AquaMaxx REEFractometer is designed to measure the salinity of NSW taking into account all the other elements that comprise salinity in the reef aquarium at the correct water temperature. The difference can amount to a 4-5% differential.

Even though the largest percentage of salt in the sea is sodium chloride, the presence of other significant ions such as magnesium and calcium in NSW results in a different refractive index to that of brine. A standard (brine) refractometer will therefore not give the correct salinity for NSW and a conversion factor must be applied.

For example, a 35 ppt (parts per thousand) solution of NSW has the same refractive index as a 36.5 ppt solution of brine. When using a brine refractometer, an aquarium hobbyist should therefore look for a reading of 36.5 ppt when trying to achieve a reading of 35 ppt for NSW.

Large, Easier to Read Scale

One of the other problems with most refractometers is the scale displayed normally reads from 0-100 ppt when we are really only interested in the region from 30-40 ppt. The AquaMaxx REEFractometer has therefore been specifically designed to read from 1.000-1.030 which gives you much better resolution of a normal 1.000-1.070 scale.

Easier to Calibrate

The AquaMaxx REEFractometer is also designed to be easy to calibrate. Calibration can be done with either a calibration solution, or simply RO/DI water. Adjustments are easily done with the included screw driver.

Manufacturer information

Marine Depot was started in 1998 by a self-professed reef geek and pre-med student Ken Wong. Ken envisioned a one-stop shop where customers could find everything they needed, from technical product specifications, reef aquarium information, expert advice on the hobby and friendly one-on-one customer support. Having grown from a one-man crew to being one of the world’s largest suppliers of reef and marine aquarium products, this very core philosophy still lives strong in the Marine Depot culture 20 years later.

No Brainer

Pros: All in one solution, one stop shopping.

This kit for mixing salt water is a no brainer in my opinion. It seems expensive at the onset, but if you are to individually price these items, you aren’t likely to be able to build your own kit with the same items for such a good price.

Each one of the pieces is good quality with the refractometer leading the way.

If you are serious about the hobby, and care about the health and overall well being of your tank inhabitants, starting with the best water parameters possible is the only way to go. This kit will help you accomplish that for projects big and small.

The pump does a great job of circulating the water (I use a 32 gallon Rubbermaid Brute). If you are using it to pump the water in to your tank, it will do that as well up to about 5’ or so. If you are like me and choose to pump the water to your tank over an extended distance, use this little guy for circulation, and pick up a larger pump for pushing the water back to your tank.

You may also choose to pick up a small stainless steel or plastic hose clamp to hold the hose to the pump. You can get them really inexpensively at just about any store that sells hardware.

Great setup

Pros: Works great. Multiple uses. Takes out the guess work.

Cons: It does not include calibration fluid.

Being a newbie to this side of aquarium keeping, this bundle was made for me. It has everything you need to mix saltwater except calibration fluid. (Must have for refractometer). Not only that, but I even use these items to transflo my RO/DI. This is just an all around great kit and on sale is a steal. Thank you MD for this great setup.
