Within the reefkeeping hobby, at some point in time an aiptasia will appear... then another, and another, if left unchecked. One of the most natural ways we have found to combat this nuisance is Peppermint Shrimp. These shrimp are not only known to consume nuisance aiptasia anemones, but scavenge waste like uneaten food or dead organic matter in hard to reach areas. They are relatively hardy and are reef-safe.
Species Information:
The peppermint shrimp (Lysmata boggessi) comes from the Florida Keys, Key West and the Gulf of Mexico where it prefers shallow reef habitats. It likes to hang out on the roofs of caves and crevasses, but may also be found within vase sponges or on the blades of seagrass.
Totally reef-safe and proven to consume glass anemones, it has for long been a favorite shrimp among marine aquarium enthusiasts. It is also important to note that this shrimp will not harm desirable anemone species.
It cannot be safely kept with predatory fishes such as triggerfish, lionfish and hawkfish.
Fairly social, it is somewhat less territorial than many other shrimp species.
It regularly spawns in aquaria; though the young generally do not survive under typical aquarium conditions, they do provide a great source of nutrition for zooplanktivorous animals (e.g. many corals).
In addition to being a sustainable alternative to wild-caught shrimp, it makes a great addition to any clean-up crew that will help to control and eliminate accumulations of solid organic waste.
Benefits of Captive-Bred Peppermint Shrimp:
Captive-bred peppermint shrimp provide a huge advantage over wild-caught specimens. Because they are cultured in captive conditions, they are better adapted to living in an aquarium and tend to be more disease resistant.
They are also better able to handle the stress of shipping.
By purchasing captive-bred organisms, you are supporting the aquaculture of marine organisms and helping make our hobby sustainable!
AlgaeBarn keeps these peppermint shrimp in an invertebrate-specific system to minimize the transfer of fish parasites and other unwanted hitchhikers.
Features:
Eat Aiptasia Peppermint Shrimp are known by Reef Aquarists for their voracious appetite of aiptasia pest anemones. They work in groups to attack and eliminate aiptasia from their environment.
Low Maintenance Peppermint Shrimp, are able to survive and thrive on various other food sources once all the aiptasia has been eliminated.
Cleanup Crew Peppermint Shrimp are Captive-Bred and Sustainable omnivores that eat a variety of foods ranging from detritus to leftover fish food. They tend to huddle in groups, waiting for an opportunity to find aiptasia or other food.

We think the best way to inspire people to protect our oceans is to help them observe, understand and learn from the magnificent creatures that inhabit them. That’s why at Algaebarn we produce premium aquacultured marine organisms that are sustainable and eco-friendly.
By providing quality live foods backed by scientific research, we aspire to improve the general health and longevity of ornamental fish. One day we hope to see all marine aquariums filled entirely with aquacultured organisms, thus reducing our hobby’s impact on natural marine environments. The best way to make that vision a reality is to start with the building blocks of all marine ecosystems; Zooplankton and Phytoplankton.
We grow all of our premium Copepods and Phytoplankton at the base of the Rocky Mountains in our state of the art 2,000sqft aquaculture facility. As hobbyists ourselves we understand the importance of knowing what goes into your aquarium. That’s why we run all of our water through a twelve stage RODI system before mixing in InstantOcean synthetic sea salt. There are no fish or copper parts anywhere in our facility so you never have to worry about introducing anything unwanted into your aquarium. We only sell premium live Copepods & nutritious Phytoplankton with no harmful chemicals or preservatives.

I have 5 Peppermint Shrimp & 1 Aiptasia Eating Filefish in my 40-gallon breeder reef tank. Between the two I have zero Aiptasia. So I know you can have at least five in a 40 breeder with no problem. I hope that helps.
One arrived alive the first time. Then they sent another that they were all dead in. And the third package, there were four that were still alive so all together we got five Thanks Algae Barn.
This was a terrible experience. There was only 2 out of 5 alive and there was evidence of a battle to the death due to there not being enough food in the jar for all five of them to live happily for 3 days in the dark. This was a terrible experience. There was only 2 out of 5 alive and there was evidence of a battle to the death due to there not being enough food in the jar for all five of them to live happily for 3 days in the dark. The shipping was way to slow. I would have happily paid for faster shipping but it was a fixed price. In order to stop this they must jar them separately and with an adamant amount of foodHide
PROS
The shipping method was very good...nicely package, no leakage and even had heater pad to keep the temp normal.
CONS
ordered medium sized shrimp, but received very small jueviniles instead, and not all alive.
REVIEW
The shrimps were too small, One was definitely dead in jar, and couldn't tell if another one was dead, cause it was just too small to see it...Not sure if the rest even survived...they might of been dinner.
PROS
Arrived alive. Order was well-packaged and temperature was warm.
CONS
Shrimp was small
REVIEW
My peppermint shrimp from algae barn arrived alive. The packaging was great. The box was warm inside when I opened it. The shrimp was sent safely inside a little jar and alive when I opened it.
