Calcium Reactors

How does a calcium reactor work? The reactor chamber holds calcium reactor media, often coral skeleton. A reactor pump quickly circulates water inside the reactor chamber. A calcium reactor feed pump, such as the Tom’s Aqua Lifter, slowly moves water through the reactor, measured in drips per minute.

CO2 is injected into the reactor. The acidic CO2 lowers the pH in the reactor to around 6.6-6.8, which melts the media and releases the elements necessary for coral growth. A pH controller or aquarium controller maintains constant pH in the reactor. Calcium rich water drips out the reactor to maintain constant Ca and Alk levels.

A typical calcium reactor package includes: Ca reactor w/ pump, co2 bottle, co2 regulator, and media. Feed pump and pH controller are usually sold separately.
