The Reef Octopus VarioS Circulation pump features a detachable controller with mount, high quality ceramic shaft with propeller bearing to reduce wear and tear and the latest variable speed flow technology for refined control, enhanced performance, energy-efficiency and safer operations.

Unlike the vast majority of circulation pumps which uses alternating current (AC), the VarioS pump boasts several key advantages over traditional AC pumps like greater energy efficiency and safer low voltage operation and produce less heat per volume of flow.

*Now aquarists can have full control of the water flow through their sump, reactors, filters or closed loop systems!!!

Refined Control
In addition to allowing the pump to run at 5 different speeds, which is pretty normal for a DC pump, the new VarioS Controller takes the pump to a new level featuring:

1. A float switch connection, which allows you to connect a float switch (included in the box) to the controller. This is an added security feature that allows you to shut off the skimmer pump when your waste collector is full or shut off your water pump when your sump water has reached a high or low level. In all, you don’t need another module or controller to add a float switch to your system.

2. Two different pause/feed modes that will shut off the pump for either 15 or 60 minute intervals. These come handy when you are feeding the tank or conducting regular maintenance such as a water change.

3. And the best feature of the VarioS controller is… a 0-10v input which will allow a 3rd party controller such as Neptune System’s APEX or Reef Keeper to take over the pump and tell it what to do. In this mode, the new VarioS controller becomes an interface between the system controller and the pump allowing you to create intricate programs using your system controller native language. This is unprecedented controllability on a skimmer or water pump. In essence, you can use your system controller as your DC pump controller!

The VarioS pump features a true slow startup where the pump slowly ramps up from zero RPM to the full preset speed over a period of approximately 10 seconds.

The pump and controller are connected via a waterproof 3-conductor union. The detachable controller will allow for a simple waterproof union. The volute can rotate to change the pump`s output orientation in 90 degree intervals, meaning users can output water vertically (up or down) as well as horizontally.

Q
250 Gallon Saltwater Tank
Need the right pump for this set up. Have a hammerhead now and its way to much and turned down. I would like one with a controller. This talk is heavily stocked with fish and corals.

According to the chart in the 2nd picture on the product page, the VrioS-6 pumps 1050gph at 4.8' of head height. We recommend at least 10x turnover for reef tanks. You may want to get a VarioS-8 depending on your flow needs and what kind of flow your overflow and sump can handle. If you're having problems with a noisy overflow, you can easily modify your overflow to reduce noise. https://blog.marinedepot.com/education-center/charts-diagrams/durso-herbie-bean-animal-overflow

Q

Great Question! you can use (Item # YH33677) to connect your pump to an Apex. Keep in mind that if you have the Neptune APEX Jr. you would require the additional VDM (Item# NS3339) module.

REVIEW
I really like this return pump. Was very easy to set up, the controller isn't complicated to use and I am amazed how quiet it is. My tank is right next to the couch and I can't tell the pump is running till the sump gets low on water!

PROS
Silent, excellent flow, controllable.
CONS
controllers known to glitch and need replacement
REVIEW
Two years, zero problems, absolutely silent. I don't mean quiet, I mean silent. i am unable to hear this pump running at all. I have a skimmer with the same pump and all I can hear is water turbulence and sometimes air intake from the skimmer itself. These pumps are outstanding.

PROS
Quite and powerful
CONS
Being able to adjust flow by percentage and not settings
REVIEW
I’m happy with this pump. I like that’s is quite and has the feature to shut off for 15 minuets or 1 hour. The 5 flow settings is nice, but I’d like it if you could turn the flow up by percentage. I can’t take it out of the first two settings because my 90 gallon can’t keep up. I’d buy f...Read More

PROS
Zero noise, no vibration, low power consumption, build in flow switch
CONS
I wish the flow switch has option to flip on/off position, so I don't have to install the switch upside down for my use case. But not a deal breaker.
REVIEW
I already have a Varios 4 for a smaller tank. I love it so much that I buy this Varios 6 for a bigger tank. When this thing sit in the sump, there is no noise at all.
I also like it comes with a flow switch, which it isn't a common feature.
