Sediment Replacement Filters for RO Systems

The sediment filter, which removes large impurities, is usually the first of the reverse osmosis system filters.

The sediment filter is typically the first cartridge in an RO system and looks like white felt (or yellow as it ages). Sediment filters are rated in microns. A 5 micron sediment filter allows smaller particles to pass through, but lasts longer. A 1 micron sediment filter cartridge has a decent mix between performance and longevity. A .5 micron sediment water filter cartridge will capture tiny particles and prolong membrane life, but will become clogged much faster. On average use, a 1 micron sediment filter needs replacement every 6 months. Some aquarists use Daylight Savings Time as a twice yearly reminder to change the pre membrane RO filter cartridges.
