Live Rock

Whether you have a fish only with live rock (FOWLR) tank or full reef tank, natural looking reef rock will take your fish tank to the next level. Live rock is basically old coral skeletons that house beneficial bacteria, which reduce ammonia and nitrite in the aquarium. A live rock aquarium will have caves and crevices for small fish and other organisms to inhabit.

Curing live rock is important before placing it in an aquarium. To cure, place the live rock in a bare tank with pump and heater for 2-3 weeks with regular water changes until it smells clean.

Increased restrictions have made it so that there is practically no Tonga, Pukani, or Fiji live rock for sale anymore. As a result, most reefers now use quarried dry live rock or artificial rock to start an aquarium.
