The Salifert Ammonia Test Kit measures the total amount of ammonia and ammonium quickly and accurately.
Ammonia and ammonium in an established aquarium should be rapidly converted by aerobic nitrification into nitrite, then into nitrate, and finally into nitrogen gas. If this does not happen then either the aquarium is not fully matured or there is a problem with the tank`s biological system, which can be caused by an excessive biological loading being placed on the system. This can cause problems in the aquarium and can be potentially fatal for inhabitants if not addressed, which is why testing these parameters is highly suggested.

Bought this test kit for my very first reef tank to make sure it was cycling properly. I gave a fishless cycle a try and not knowing what to expect, my ammonia levels weren't reading high enough to be in the 4ppm range to start a new tank (ideal bacteria growth parameter) so I added more and waited. Levels still were too low where it would take a long time to grow a bacteria colony so I added more ammonia. This went on for some time with no initial increase above 1.5ppm. Then I threw a shrimp in and watched it break down. Still 1.5ppm. Finally tested nitrites to see if I had made any progress. I got a read which made me realize the ammonia levels must be dropping. I got a 2nd test kit of a different brand and my ammonia levels were off the charts. Wanting to continue the cycle but get down into the ideal ammonia levels for aerobic bacteria growth, I did partial water changes instead of a full change. Five 50% water changes later I was down to 4ppm ammonia. Thank goodness I started with dry rock and some bacteria cultures instead of live rock (I later added live sand which cycled the tank very fast without adding unwanted critters or corals). Tank finally cycled after 3 months of waiting.
I've read good reviews for this brand so my defective test kit was likely one of the few. Bottom line, get 2 different brands of test kits, especially when you're starting out.Hide
Typical of Salifert test kits. They are easy to use and give accurate, repeatable results. I also have their Nitrate, Phosphorus, pH, Calcium and Alkalinity test kits. 5 stars to each.
You need to have multiple test kits as they all read different levels. Salifert is decent and the color card is not terrible to decipher. Although expensive we really like it.W e use additives that throw other test kit off but the Salifert is the one we trust the most.We work with fry so accuracy is most important.Kit is also very easy too use.007fish
I purchased this kit because I suspected my API kit was giving false readings. Using the Salifert kit my ammonia reading was 0 (correct) while the API kit read 1.0! I will not waste my money on API again and will continue to purchase Salifert kits!
