Salifert Strontium Profi-Test

  • In a marine aquarium strontium plays an important role in accelerating the growth of coral and calcareous algae and natural sea water contains approx. 7 - 9 mg/L strontium.
  • Strontium is very difficult to test for, but if there is found to be a depletion of calcium in the aquarium then strontium levels are likely to be very low as well.
  • It is advisable to maintain a strontium concentration of between 5 and 20 mg/L.
  • Salifert was the first to introduce a strontium test kit and this test measures both ionically free and moderately complex strontium in increments of 5 mg/L.
  • Sufficient for up to 40 tests.
  • For marine use only.
Warning!

Reagent Sr-1 is caustic. In case of contact with eyes rinse immediately with plenty of water and contact a physician immediately. In case of ingestion do not induce vomiting but contact a physician immediately. In case of contact with skin wash with plenty of water. Keep out of reach of children.
Instructions:
  1. Fill test vial with 5ml of water (use 5ml syringe).
  2. Add 12 drops Sr-1 (caution caustic) and swirl gently for 10 seconds.
  3. Add 1 level scoop of Sr-2 and swirl gently for 5 seconds. The color should be red/pink.
  4. Fit the 1ml syringe without the yellow label with the small plastic tip. Ensure that the tip is mounted firmly. Fill this syringe with 1ml of Sr-3 (lower end of black rubber ring at 1.00ml mark). Dose this amount in the test vial and swirl gently for 20 seconds. If the color has changed to blue and remains so even after an additional 30 seconds then the calcium concentration is far too low (approx. 300mg/l or less) and should be corrected first before doing strontium testing.
  5. Again fill this syringe with 1ml of Sr-3. Add this drop wise to the test vial. Swirl gently for a few seconds after each drop until the color changes to blue. If the color has changed to blue then swirl gently for 15 seconds. It is very likely that the color will revert back and will not be pure blue. In that case add one more drop of Sr-3 and swirl again for 15 seconds. Repeat this until the color remains blue.
  6. Hold the syringe with the plastic tip facing upward. Read the value at the upper part of the black rubber ring. Look for this value in the calcium table to get the calcium concentration.
  7. Fill the 1ml syringe with the yellow label (no plastic tip needed and is not supplied) with 0.5ml Sr-4 (lower end of black rubber ring at 0.50ml mark). Add this to the test vial and swirl gently for 10 seconds. The color will now be red/pink.
  8. Add two levels scoops of Sr-5 and swirl gently until this powder has dissolved. Let it stand for 12-15 minutes (use a clock).
  9. Fill the 1ml syringe without the yellow label and fitted with the plastic tip with 1ml of Sr-3 . Add this drop wise to the test vial. Swirl gently for 20 seconds (should definitely not be less that 20 seconds) after each drop until the color changes to blue.
  10. Hold the syringe with the syringe with the plastic tip facing upward. Read the value at the upper part of the black rubber ring. Look for this value in the strontium table to obtain the strontium concentration.

Completely inaccurate

Over the past couple of months, I've purchased and evaluated most of the hobbyist-level marine test kits from Red Sea, Salifert, Elos, Hanna, Nyos, SeaChem, Giesemann, Lamotte, and Hach, and then compared them to results from simultaneous water samples sent to Triton Labs for spectroscopy.

My conclusion is that there is NO accurate hobbyist level test for strontium. Both this test and the one from SeaChem both routinely read 0 or a low level even when the test is performed correctly, although simultaneous samples sent to Triton labs give toxic levels of 20 or higher. Continuing to add supplements on the mistaken impression that you need more, based on this test, can easily lead to overdosage.

Step #7

Pros: Learned a lesson

Cons: Waste of time and money

There are a lot of steps to this test, which sucks. I did everything accurately two times. I get to step #7 and it doesn't do it what it said it would. Complete waste of time and money for me, which seems to be a common theme with this hobby. Learn from mistakes and move on. I'll try another product. I've read that high calcium levels, which I have, will not allow you to test with this kit. You would think they would compensate for this factor.

Salifert Test Kits R Reliable

I have been using this test kit for 5yrs and it's very good. Even though is indicates that it tests for Strontium, it also tests for calcium. The calcium testing is not accurate at all. To test calcium I use my calcium monitor, anyway this review is not about the calcium monitor. I also use the magnesium test kit which is very good. When I buy my test kits I only use the "Salifert" brand. I trust them completely.

Love This Test!!

After wondering if the Strontium levels were correct for my 144 coral reef tank, problem solved! This test is easy to use and accurate. I do not have any other results to compare the strontium but I did for the calcium. Be mindful of a couple of typos in the directions; referring to the same syringe with a red label in one place and a yellow band in another as well as "end" instead of and in the calcium portion of the test (which by the way, is awesome and very accurate).

Great Test system

It checks for both calcium and strontium levels. Very accurate. The only drawback to this test kit is, if your calcium level is to high then you can't get a strontium reading. I'd still recommend it to any aquarist looking for a high quality test kit.

Salifert strontium test kit

This test is not very accurate as it titrates only between 1.00 and 0.90 ml. Maybe it's just tough to get a good commercial strontium test. I used this kit more to determine whether my strontium was about 10 or 0 mg/L?

the switch

i used instant ocean test kits for about 15 years with my saltwater fish only tanks and they are very good test kits better then any drip drop test tube kits!! that is until i went reef and tried these salifert kits because of all the good things i heard over the years. wow... this is it! the way to go! they are more expensive ...BUT i get more tests...so it adds up. get um!

Best Kits Available

Even though it's expensive and only gives 25 tests, this is the best Strontium kit out there, by far! This kit also includes the Calcium test, as this is the first portion of the test. Salifert doesn't play this up. I think that's just so they can still sell Calcium kits. To me, the Strontium test portion of it is just a bonus. You won't find an easier or more accurate Strontium kit out there.

A bit complicated

It seemed a bit difficult to use the first time and there were many steps. I was not confident with the final reading and I may need several more attempts to understand how to use it correctly.
