Aquarium Dry Sand

Live sand vs dry sand: Although live aragonite sand has many benefits, dry sand is just as good as live sand with a little time. Seed your dry sand bed with a cup of sand from an established reef tank, or some live rock, and your dry sand will become live sand.

Should you run a deep sand bed reef tank? Most reefers run a shallow sand bed reef tank, but there are benefits to a deep sand bed. While a shallow sand bed has aerobic zones to convert ammonia into nitrite and nitrate, a deep sand bed will have anaerobic zones that convert nitrate into nitrogen gas. A fine sugar sand makes for a great deep sand bed. Just keep in mind that a deep sand bed may also produce dangerous hydrogen sulfide, so it is important not to disturb the deeper parts of the sand bed.
