Santa Monica Filtration HOG1x Hang-On-Glass Algae Scrubber

The HOG1x is a hang-on-glass algae scrubbing filtration system that can be used to reduce your glass cleaning and water changes while creating an environment for living micro-animals to grow inside the scrubber. The HOG1x is more powerful than its sister model, the HOG1, boasting two additional LEDs and higher nutrient absorption capacity.

The HOG1x is designed to attach to your aquarium wall via magnets, and is recommended for glass or acrylic 1/4" (6.25mm) to 1/2" (12.5mm) thick. The HOG1x is not recommended for thin 1/8" (3mm) glass used in many low-cost 10 gallon aquariums, as the strong magnets may crack the glass.

  • Utilizes a rough & light-reflecting Green Grabber algal growth attachment surface, which accelerates algae growth
  • Upflow scrubber technology prevents overflow risk-- since it is ALL underwater, it can`t overflow onto your floor
  • Has 24 square inches (150 square cm) of algal growth surface
  • No electrical parts go inside the aquarium
  • Air bubbler supplied-- no air stone required
  • Will run on both 120V and 240V
  • Power supply comes with a 10 ft (300 cm) UL and CE approved power adapter cord with a simple 2-wire U.S. plug, which can easily be modified
  • Can be used as a stand-alone filter or in conjunction with most other filters
  • Dry-Out proof: Power outages will not affect it since it`s always under water
  • Harvested algae can be used to feed your fish, if desired
  • Includes a 1 year warranty for replacement or repair
  • Includes 3 ft (90 cm) of vinyl airline, but requires a small air pump [a 2-outlet air pump combined into 1-outlet (using a "T" or "Y" airline fitting) and with a control knob to reduce air if desired, is best in most situations]
  • Needs to be cleaned ("harvested") every 7 to 21 days or when thick with growth
  • Magnets attach the outside cover to the inside cover through the aquarium wall, and can be used on glass or acrylic 1/4 inch (6.25 mm) to 1/2 inch (12.5 mm). For aquarium walls over 3/4" (19mm), you can attach the HOG1x to the sump instead
  • Magnets are protected by a hard plastic cover inside black silicone, preventing rust or scrapes
  • Not recommended for tanks with thin 1/8" (3mm) glass, as the strong magnets may crack the glass

  • Includes four red (660 nm) 3-watt LEDs, which are attached to two heat sinks inside the cover. *The cover does get warm
  • Lights are powerful enough to grow green algae
  • The LEDs will give the aquarium or sump a slight red color at night when the aquarium lights are off
  • The LEDs never need replacing
  • A timer is required to run the LEDs for up to 22 hours per day

  • Dimensions:5" wide x 6 5/8" high x 1" thick (12.7cm wide x 16.8cm high x 2.5cm thick)
  • Recommended Water Level: 5" (12.5cm) of water to operate in
  • LEDs: 4 red (660 nm) 3-watt LEDs, which are attached to 2 heat sinks inside the cover
  • Requires a small air pump that can pump at least 1.0 liters per minute (.04 cfm), which medium-cost air pumps can usually handle. Pumps that say they can handle 2 or more airstones/outlets, or pumps with 2 tubing attachments instead of one, will usually be more than enough. You can have as much air as you like, however; 5 lpm pumps are no problem.

Pros: Keeps phosphate levels near zero

Cons: Takes a little while to get the algae plate covered.

Used for my Biocube 32; took a couple weeks to get significant coverage, but once it gets going phosphate levels really do diminish. Highly recommended!

Great but not perfect

Pros: Works reliably. Simple, easy to install.

Cons: Material is less robust than I would like; Can be a nuisance to clean

This is great quick option to add an algae scrubber to a tank. Easy to setup and I feel my tank has been healthier since I've started using it. It did inspire me to buy one of the drop-in scrubbers from the same company.
Things preventing five stars:
The plastic seems a little flimsy. Have to be careful when handling it especially near the other half's magnet (the instructions are clear about this)
Cleaning is not the easiest for me. When I remove the half inside the tank, there's a bunch of algae that always escapes. And I have limited handling ability because of the connected airline. This could probably be fixed with better technique.

Best scrubber on the market

Pros: Works great. Company stands behind it

Cons: None

Followed the easy directions and it took about 3 weeks and this thing really took off! Attached it to my sump. It doesn’t really create any heat and you can move it around and adjust the bubbles for sound. I had a technical issue and contacted Santa Monica and they replaced the part immediately totally standing behind their warranty. Very impressed. This is the scrubber to buy and they stand behind it. To me that’s all that matters

Works great. Customer service above and beyond

Pros: Great customer service, great product

Cons: None

Put this on my sump. It took about 3 weeks and it started working overtime! After about a month and a half I either got it wet or the LED lights started to malfunction. Not sure if I got it wet or it was a simple malfunction. Either way I contacted Santa Monica filtration and they sent me a new LED pad at no charge. Great product and they stand behind their products. I’ll be buying another. Get the bigger one!! These are AMAZING!

Expensive for the sake of being expensive

Pros: Grows algae

Cons: Not as good as the competition, expensive

Doesnt work that well for what I paid, a simple refugium works just as well, and the other brand which I switched to after cost less and did way more for my system

Pros: Small, fits in sump

Cons: None, get the exact pump and a tube splitter

Get rid of your mag float. Takes about 3 weeks to start working. The results are unbelievable! Worth the money and then some. Follow the directions and have some patience. This product is amazing. I haven’t cleaned my glass in a month
