Many years ago I ran a TUNZE Comline 3110/2 protein skimmer. Tunze has a good reputation, and if I remember correctly they invented protein skimmers (could be wrong). That old 3110 model was a pain in the butt. So is this new one. Both are far too reliant on the water level, which changes too much to be a reliable set up for skimmers. Most of us don't have auto top-off systems. I mean be real. I assumed that since this new model looked so much nicer (that old one had this very odd brown plastic) that things had improved. Nope. The mount on both are far too fiddly. This 9001 uses a magnet that is simply not powerful enough. The box says it can be used on tanks with 3/8" thick glass. Mine is under that thickness (1/4"). And yet twice now I have checked on the tank and found that the skimmer had completely fallen into the aquarium, and the outside magnet was on the floor. This happens when the collection cup fills up all the way and weighs too much for the magnet to hold. This is, to say the least, poor design. It is also just too delicate to adjust the height in the water; sometimes I try to adjust the position of the skimmer by moving the magnet (slowly, very slowly), and the whole skimmer will just disengage and fall to the bottom of the tank. It would be nice if it had something--anything--that one could hold onto at the top to help move it around. This thing has just made me miss my old AquaC Remora. I ran it for many years until it broke, and they are now out of business. It's a shame. That skimmer was great. This one is not.Hide
CONS
Magnet could be better, waterline/position in water has to be exact or won't skim, pricey for size of unit

Really wanted to give this higher rating but so far disappointed...…After reading manyyy good reviews on this upgrade skimmer for my RSM130D (with in tank media basket which I love that) I've been trying to "break in" this skimmer (which is very small I might add) for over a week and still not skimming properly. Don't feel it was worth $117.00 only reason I bought it was all the good reviews. Also it's VERY touchy i.e. water line is high and if not sitting exactly at line forget about it skimming anything at all. Wish I'd gone with the 9002 model. I will give it 5 stars for quietness though.Hide
the skimmer works , it has several cons 1 the magnetic is not strong enough luckily i had a stronger one. 2 it is noisy, but I hope once it is broken in it will get better.
This is a great little skimmer. I have it set up to surface skim in the middle/back of a IM 20. Had it a few weeks now and I’m getting dark skimate with occasional chunks. This is a great little skimmer. I have it set up to surface skim in the middle/back of a IM 20. Had it a few weeks now and I’m getting dark skimate with occasional chunks. I did get micro bubbles for a week and a half, but I rode it out and now this thing is awesome. It does need a constant water level to be effective. Airline could be a tiny bit longer. I think the pump is fairly quite, not silent, but quiet. I would buy again.Hide
PROS
A liitle movement of the whole unit every time you remove and clean up the collection cup.
CONS
You don’t even notice that it’s inside the tank, doing the job.
REVIEW
It really does its job! In just few hours, I can see those cloudy dirt coming from my 35gal aquarium and it’s quiet to operate. I can feel all those fish are in in good and happy environment .
CONS
Short air tubing that needs to get outside of tank
REVIEW
I bought this to replace the stock skimmer that came with my Solana 34 gallon all-in-one that had finally died. I am floored at how much quieter my tank is now. This baby is quiet! As noted in the instructions, break-in took a week or so. I never had a problem with micro bubbles.

One caveat: my tank’s built-in-back sump keeps a water level thats about 6 inches lower than the tank top. This skimmer has an air hose with silencer that is meant to sit outside of the tank, but that hose is way too short to get the silencer outside in my tank design, and the instructions say not to modify it. Well, I modified it by adding an additional 6 inches of tubing, the widest bore I could fit and with no additional fittings restricting flow, and it still works great and foams aplenty.Hide
