Over time, a refractometer will shift its measurement, so it is important to regularly recalibrate the refractometer. Calibrate your refractometer with a liquid solution with a known specific gravity, a seawater calibration solution. You can also use distilled water, which has a specific gravity of 0. However, it is best to calibrate the refractometer to seawater for the most accurate results because the refractometer will be most accurate close to the calibration point.
